Where the Steps Began

Before there was Pride, there was a home.

In 1968, twelve people gathered in the Los Angeles home of Troy Perry to create a community where LGBTQ+ people could worship openly and live authentically. That gathering became the first Metropolitan Community Church. Together, those early members participated in the historic first Pride marches, taking some of the first public steps toward visibility, equality, and liberation.

Where Pride Began

In 1970, Los Angeles hosted the world’s first permitted Pride parade, helping establish a tradition of public visibility, community celebration, and civic engagement that would spread around the world. Today, the city’s neighborhoods, landmarks, archives, and cultural institutions continue to preserve and expand this legacy.
